What does the evil eye mean? The story behind the nazar charm

You have probably seen it on a keychain, above a doorway or hanging from a friend's wrist: a blue eye looking straight back at you. The evil eye, often called nazar, is one of the oldest protective symbols in the world, and it is still one of the most loved charms to wear today.

What does the evil eye mean?

The idea behind the evil eye is simple. Across many cultures, people believed that a jealous or envious look could bring bad luck. The evil eye charm is the answer to that look: an eye that "looks back" and turns the bad energy away from the person wearing it.

In other words, the evil eye charm is not the evil eye itself. It is a little guardian that watches over you.

Where does the evil eye come from?

The belief is thousands of years old and shows up across the Mediterranean, the Middle East and South Asia. In India, the idea of nazar lagna (catching someone's envious eye) is familiar to almost everyone, from the black dot on a baby's cheek to the lemon and chillies hung at a shop door. The blue eye charm grew from the same idea and travelled the world.

What do the evil eye colours mean?

The classic evil eye is blue, but each colour carries its own wish. These are the most common meanings:

  • Dark blue (cobalt): protection, calm and good luck. This is the traditional nazar colour.
  • Light blue or turquoise: general protection, peace and clear thinking.
  • Red: courage and confidence.
  • Pink: love, friendship and kindness.
  • Green: balance, hope and new beginnings.
  • Black: strength and grounding.

There is no wrong choice. Many people simply wear the colour that feels most like them.

How do you wear an evil eye charm?

There are no strict rules, but a few traditions are worth knowing:

  • Keep it close. A necklace that sits near the heart, or a bracelet on the wrist you use most, keeps the charm with you all day.
  • Wear it every day. The evil eye is meant to be an everyday guardian, not only for special occasions.
  • Give it as a gift. In many families, an evil eye is the first piece of jewellery someone receives, because a nazar given with love is thought to be extra lucky.

Is it okay to buy an evil eye for yourself?

Yes. Some people believe a gifted evil eye is more powerful, but buying one for yourself is just as common and just as meaningful. Think of it as a small promise to look after yourself.
